Sunday’s Photo Shoot – the full story!

Please do check out our recent post on our letter of complaint about the developers’ handling of the consultation process. But now, I promised to write a post about Sunday and the protest and photoshoot.

The day started off with ominous clouds gathered in the sky. We kept nervously looking out of the window wondering if the whole thing would be rained off. Or whether some of our older supporters and youngsters, who wanted to come, would be able to come if the weather was torrential.

At twenty to two, I set off, meeting one neighbour who I had never even spoken to about the campaign, already setting off up the hill. I arrived at Craighouse to see a couple of people playing with dogs. Would people turn up?

Friends of Craighouse question the consultation process

Friends of Craighouse have received numerous questions about the questionnaire, the consultation process and the planning process.

Obviously, we are not the developers or the planning department, but we have tried our best to find out more for our members – and it has proved surprisingly difficult to answer their questions.

On Friday, we put in a complaint to Edinburgh City Planning Office about Craighouse Partnership’s implementation of the consultation process.*

Elected Representatives Come out in Support of the Friends

Councillors and MSPs join our protest on the orchard

Several Councillors, MPs and MSPs joined us in our protest yesterday. Here is a photo of us on the orchard (where the developers want to build 3-storey housing). With us here are Paul Godzik, Labour Councillor for Meadows and Morningside; Melanie Main, Green spokesperson for Meadows and Morningside; Alison Johnstone, Green MSP for Lothian and Councillor for Meadows and Morningside and Jim Eadie, SNP MSP for Edinburgh Southern. MP Ian Murray (Labour) also joined in our earlier protest.

The strange case of the disappearing FAQ

On Friday, the Craighouse Partnership put up a new website with a page described as FAQ, (or Frequently Asked Questions) which had been pre-announced by email to large numbers of people as being their response to questions from the public in their consultation process. Since then, it has been removed. No explanation is given of why.

The FAQs were taken down after we wrote about them here.

Photo Today

At 2pm, Craighouse lawn.

Do come along and bring anyone you can. I am looking out at the weather, nervously, but so far the forecast seems clear for 2 and should get brighter through the day, but you might want to bring a mac in case.

Also, the Friends of Braidburn Valley Park asked me to let people know they are holding their annual autumn clean up in the Braid burn Valley Park til 4pm if anyone fancies that. (As long as that’s after the photo.)

Thanks so much and see you later!

Excessive new-build? Looks like it, according to Mountgrange’s own website

Yesterday, The Craighouse Partnership put up a list of FAQs on their website. But there are important questions that remain unanswered.

The Friends of Craighouse believe that, with a site as important as this one, that it is paramount that the figures are scrutinised properly. We have requested The White Young Green report – quoted at the exhibition – but The Partnership have failed to  furnish the general public with any detail or evidence to support their claims – and continue to do so.

The Friends have requested the White Young Green report through a Freedom of Information request. Continue reading

Article in the Evening News

From the Scotsman site, near-fullpage article in the Evening News today :

Campaign hits out at housing for Craighouse

HUNDREDS of people have joined a campaign against plans to redevelop a historic city beauty spot, saying it would be like “sticking a supermarket on the Castle Esplanade”.

Edinburgh Napier University’s Craighouse campus in Morningside was sold to the Craighouse Partnership earlier this year in a deal that could see up to 200 homes built on the site.

Campaigners fear the “excessive” development will destroy the grounds and threaten public access to the site, which is located on one of Edinburgh’s seven hills. The Friends of Craighouse Grounds and Wood campaign group has been formed in direct response to the £300 million project run by a consortium, which includes Sundial Properties, Mountgrange Real Estate Opportunity Fund and the university itself.

Rosy Barnes, a founder member of the group, said: “Everyone wants the buildings to be used and to have a good future.

“The question is whether the site should be spoiled for that and we don’t believe it needs to be, because the landscape is as important as the buildings.

“It’s like refurbishing Edinburgh Castle and sticking a supermarket on the Esplanade.

“We want to preserve the green space so want to minimise new buildings on the site.

“This is a heavily protected green space and I don’t see that this is the kind of area where there should be substantial new build developments. An ideal outcome would be to preserve the buildings and preserve the landscape.”

Ms Barnes added that she has been impressed by the level of support shown by the community….(continued)

Photograph: we need your help!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

We are having a  photo for the press on Sun 9th October at 2pm and we need your help.

We will be meeting on the lawns at Craighouse and we need to get as many people as possible there to hold hands across the orchard (where they want to build 3 storey development), or just to stand across the site and show the level of support there is for preserving this wonderful green space.

This is really important and will help us publicise this issue and make more people aware of what is happening.

Please come along and bring anyone you can – friends, family, neighbours. Children are really welcome and we want to get them involved in thinking of fun ideas for the photograph as we will try lots of things out.

If you have a dog – bring them too! The more people we can get the more stunning the photo will be.

We hope it will also be a lot of fun!
